Help Us Bring a Dog Park to Frisco
Welcome to the FriscoDogPark.org website, operated by Frisco Dog Park, Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. As you may already know, Dog Parks are not a new concept. They’ve existed for more than 30 years and there are literally thousands of them all over the country – Dog Parks have become a National Recreation Trend.
To date, Frisco does not have a Dog Park.
Over the years, many groups have approached the Frisco City Council about building a Dog Park. To our knowledge, the earliest request was made in 2000. In January 2009, the Council approved adding the Dog Park to its list of projects, but did not allocate funding or identify a timeframe for construction. We were told that funding would not be available to construct the park until 2013, at the earliest. But during a recent City Council meeting, some of the Council members and the Chair of the Parks & Recreation Board stated that it could be 5 - 7 years before the Dog Park is built.
Because we would like to have a Dog Park sooner rather than later, we approached the Council last summer with a very reasonable proposal - build a temporary Dog Park of which our organization would cost share. The temporary park could be used until funding is available to construct the permanent park and/or the project was bumped up on the existing priority list. Our request was denied. During our journey, we have heard many explanations about why the Dog Park is not a priority for the City. The explanations range from "lack of funding" to "we're not going to build a park for dogs" to "the citizens of Frisco don't want a Dog Park" to "the Dog Park won't get used," etc. Until these perceptions change, we will not have a Dog Park in Frisco. The only way to change the perceptions regarding an unwanted Dog Park is for a large volume of people to share their pro-dog park views with the Mayor and Council. PLEASE let them know that this amenity should be a priority for our City by sending an email to mayorandcouncil@friscotexas.gov. Our citizens have been requesting a Dog Park for 10 years. Please help us make it a reality.
